Philadelphia Industrial Development Corporation (PIDC) is a private, not for profit corporation founded in 1958 to promote economic development throughout Philadelphia. A cornerstone PIDC development project is the Philadelphia Navy Yard. The Navy Yard is included in the Keystone Opportunity Improvement Zone (KOIZ), providing significant tax breaks for qualified businesses. This session will highlight the business opportunities and incentives offered by the Navy Yard.

The Ship Systems Engineering Station (SSES) located at the Philadelphia Naval Business Center (the former property of the Naval Station Philadelphia and the Philadelphia Naval Shipyard) is a vital part of the Naval Surface Warfare Center, Carderock Division (NSWCCD).In 1992, the former NAVSSES consolidated with the David Taylor Research Center to form the Carderock Division. The SSES brings together the efforts of over 2,000 engineers. SSES is the Navy's principal Test and Evaluation Station and In-Service Engineering Agent for all hull, mechanical and electrical (HM&E) ship systems and equipments. SSES has the capability to test and engineer the full range of shipboard systems and equipment from full-scale propulsion systems to digital controls and electric power systems. The presenter will highlight the small business opportunities available to suppliers in the Delaware Valley and how potential suppliers should pursue those opportunities.
   
  Science Technology Engineering & Math (STEM) Initiative, Tony Girifalco, Delaware Valley Industrial Resource Center, and Joseph Welsh, Collegiate Consortium
There is growing concern that the United States is not preparing a sufficient number of students, teachers, and practitioners in the areas of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). A large majority of secondary school students fail to reach proficiency in math and science, and many are taught by teachers lacking adequate subject matter knowledge. When compared to other nations, the math and science achievement of U.S. pupils and the rate of STEM degree attainment appear inconsistent with a nation considered the world leader in scientific innovation. In a recent international assessment of 15-year-old students, the U.S. ranked 28th in math literacy and 24th in science literacy. Moreover, the U.S. ranks 20th among all nations in the proportion of 24-year-olds who earn degrees in natural science or engineering. The presenters will discuss the active STEM initiatives in the Delaware Valley and how the audience can get involved.

The Delaware Valley Chapter of the National Defense Industrial Association (NDIA) consists of over 1300 members representing leading organizations in the greater Philadelphia region that support the defense industrial base. The chapter is committed to support the programs and activities of NDIA, provide a means for liaison with local government agencies and personnel, and encourage and facilitate the development of the national defense industrial base within the region. Our programs foster the exchange of information between industry and government with particular reference to national security. The presenter will discuss the benefits of NDIA membership and highlight the Delaware Valley Chapter initiatives, events and networking opportunities.

Aker Philadelphia Shipyard (“APSI”) is a leading U.S. commercial shipyard constructing vessels for operation in the U.S. Jones Act market. It possesses some of the most modern shipyard facilities in the United States and has earned a reputation as the preferred provider of oceangoing merchant vessels. The yard currently has a workforce of 1,300 consisting of approximately 700 own employees and 600 subcontractors (turnkey and working under APSI supervision). The presenter will highlight the small business opportunities available to suppliers in the Delaware Valley and how potential suppliers should pursue those opportunities.

On February 17, 2009, President Obama signed into law the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (ARRA or Recovery Act) which contained $800 billion worth of spending provisions and tax incentives that are intended to help revitalize the U.S. economy. The ARRA is a massive piece of legislation (more than 1,500 pages) with provisions affecting almost every department and agency of the federal government. The presenter will discuss the implications for your company and the next steps needed for you to take advantage of this historic legislation.
